Although summer is a time to relax and let loose, there are lots of little steps we can take to substantially help the environment. A few simple changes can guarantee that you will be having a fun and greener summer at the same time. So make sure your summer fun doesn’t turn out to be damaging to the environment by following these simple steps.
Say "No" to AC
With the heat waves we have been facing recently, many feel the need to crank up air conditioning in their cars and houses. Opt to open up the windows in your car instead of quickly pushing the AC button. Not only should the breeze keep you cool but you will also be saving tons of energy! If you have an air conditioner in your house however, make sure all your windows are closed when it is on. That way, it will be able to work more efficiently, and you will not be wasting as much energy!
Flick Off
Turning off lights can prove to be extremely beneficial to the environment. With the bright summer sun lasting for long hours, turning on lights in the summertime proves to be unnecessary. Light bulbs also give off lots of heat, so by turning off lights you will be helping the environment as well as keeping your room cool!
Outdoor Precautions
What would summer be without crazy beach parties, picnics at the park and large BBQs with friends and family? Although these outdoor activities can be fun, it is important that we remember to clean up our garbage before we leave. If you are having campfires, remember to keep them contained in a fire pit and douse them with water before leaving. Following simple precautions can help keep these outdoor habitats safe and clean.
Organic Fruits
Mangoes, watermelons, grapes, berries; fruits can be great snacks in the summer. To make a greener choice when purchasing fruit, try opting for locally grown fruit or organic brands. Fruits that are organic contain zero pesticides, which are chemicals that severely destroy the environment.
Don’t Drive
Staying home all day is definitely no fun in the summer since we all want to be out and about. However, instead of driving place to place, try walking or riding your bike as greener modes of transportation. At the very least, try and organize a carpool. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you will be getting some physical activity as well!
Bottle Up
With the hot weather, staying hydrated in the summer is very important. Try buying a reusable water bottle for yourself, so you don’t have to waste hundreds of plastic ones. That way you can stay healthy and green.
