Book Review: Watching July by Christine Hart

4 Stars

Christine Hart tells an engaging story in her first young adult novel.

When 16-year-old July is forced to leave her Vancouver home to live in a small town after her mother’s violent death, she feels as if her life will never move forward. But she soon becomes friends with an outgoing girl at her school and experiences things she never thought she was capable of doing.

When her hot neighbour asks her out, July begins to think that the move was a good idea after all. But when her teenage relationship becomes controlling, she begins to think otherwise. Receiving warnings from her lost mother, July is confused, worried and scared about what these warnings could mean.

Hart’s novel delivers an engaging story about the strong bond between mother and daughter. Her writing depicts the denial a person can have towards dark teenage relationships, and how a once happily-ever-after, can become a controlling lost future.

This novel includes deep emotions, surprises and mystery.
