A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer

A Child Called “It” is an autobiographical memoir by Dave Pelzer about his mother who abused him when he was a child. Calling him “It” instead of by his real name, she sets out to make him her personal slave. Starting at the age of four, she begins to torture him – slapping him across the face and even putting his hands on a gas stove while telling him he’s a bad boy and that he is naughty. His brothers are made to join in on tormenting him, and his dad does nothing to stop the abuse and instead defends his wife. Even though this book was published back in 1994, it is a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who is able to handle the serious and sad topic matter. If you enjoy the book, make sure to check out Pelzer’s sequels – The Lost Boy, as well as A Man Named Dave.
