Five Ways to Show Love to Animals

In this month of sickly sweet, over-commercialized “love,” why not show a little true heartfelt love towards animals? These wonderful creatures enrich our lives, so here are a mere five ways you can show you love them too in this fine month of February.

Adopt or foster an abused animal.

As opposed to buying a companion animal from a pet store, and thus potentially perpetuating and supporting the atrocities of puppy mills, why not adopt or foster an abused animal and help support such rescue organizations as HART (Humane Animal Rescue Team) in Edmonton.

Volunteer with your local humane society or animal rescue centre.

All rescued animals are in severe need of love and kindness – after fathomless years of only bearing witness to human cruelty, do they not deserve a little kindness? If you are unable to volunteer, perhaps donate needed items like sturdy shelters, blankets or food.

Go vegetarian or vegan (or at least attempt it for a week or so!)
According to PETA’s website, www.goveg.com, those who adopt a vegetarian diet save over 100 animals a year! Even by attempting to eat a vegetarian or vegan meal one to three times a week, you have helped spare a few animals’ lives.

Spay or neuter your companion animals!
As strange a way this may be of showing love, by spaying or neutering your pet, you will help prevent the potential scenario of a companion animal with a litter of little ones that you are unable to find homes for, and that will suffer neglect. Spaying or neutering your pet will help lower the number of potentially unwanted animals and reduce the strain upon your local animal shelters.

Don’t let your animals go naked!
Always make sure to adorn your companion animal with a collar, name tag or electronic chip to safeguard them if they ever get lost. How are people supposed to return your pet to you if they have no way of knowing who it belongs to? Even if your pet is micro-chipped, make sure to pop a collar on them – your animal’s life may well depend upon it.
