Up

4 stars

"Up" is one of the most uplifting films of our time.

Rating: G
Stars: Edward Asner, Christopher Plummer, Bob Peterson, and Jordan Nagai

What’s the story?

After losing his wife and apparently his mind, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen decides to make the journey he and his wife had always dreamt about, to South America. Carl’s mode of transportation? His house. By attaching all of the balloons he owns to his house, the former balloon salesman creates the perfect vehicle to escape the everyday pressures of his life. Along with a stowaway eight-year-old boy named Russell, a bird and a talking dog, Carl makes his way around a cliff in South America to set his house in the perfect place beside Paradise Falls.

Why see it?
A typical Disney movie in all aspects, Up is a perfect family film. It includes bad guys, talking animals, a simple plot, and, of course, the almighty hero. Up is Pixar’s tenth film and will surely be just as successful as the others, including Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. With insane minute details, (look out for the tag sticking out of one of the men’s shirts right before the house launches off), this movie is the next instant Pixar classic.

Problems?

If anything, the plot is a bit too simple. It is obvious what is going to happen and who is going to do what from about five minutes into the movie. It can be a bit boring at times as the scenes tend to be drawn out, presumably so that the younger audience members can fully understand everything.

All in All:
This is an incredibly cute movie with a heartwarming message.
