First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes an ex with benefits.
Stars: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin
Rating: 14A
What's the story?
Jane Adler (Streep) is a successful mother who was been divorced for 10 years. She is finally content and happy with her life and is ready to start another relationship - yet fate decides to mess with her life just a little bit more. Her ex-husband, Jake (Baldwin), decides that after 10 years, he is still in love with her, just as she begins dating her new man, Adam (Martin). Can Jane get on with her new fantastic life without falling back in love with her ex-husband...again?
Why see it?
While Alex Baldwin has been better in other movies, Streep does an amazing job playing the character of the confused Jane. You feel like you are her best friend and you just want to tell her to choose the right guy. Meanwhile, Steve Martin and Meryl Streep have good chemistry and make the perfect couple, sharing good laughs, fun times and a bit of love. The movie is full of funny parts that will have you laughing like no tomorrow.
Problems?
The complicated love triangle is funny yet also annoying at times. Alec Baldwin's character is so full of himself as the ex-husband who does not mind messing up someone's life no matter what happens. As Jake screws up Jane's life, he also messes up his new wife's life. Can we say “serial cheater?” It's hard to cheer for him when his personality is so repulsive. If you don't like chick flicks, I wouldn't recommend watching this movie. And even for people who do like chick flicks, I thought there wasn't quite enough drama to suit my interests.
All in all:
A decent movie for a girls' night out - in the cheap theatres!
