Movies to Get you in the Holiday Spirit

Rekindle your holiday spirit with these festive films.

As Christmas looms, the stress of buying presents and planning events can sometimes get in the way of holiday cheer. After a busy day, there’s nothing more relaxing than curling up and watching a movie on a cold winter night. Here are our favourite Christmas movies to get you into the holiday spirit.

Elf (2003)

In this Christmas classic, Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a grown man who was raised at the North Pole as an elf. This comedy follows Buddy as he is shocked to find out that he’s not really one of Santa’s helpers. In order to find his real father, Buddy takes to the streets of New York City. Get ready for tons of laughs as Buddy tries to fit in with the hustle and bustle of a big-city lifestyle, while at the same time trying to revive the citizens’ diminishing holiday spirit.

Home Alone (1990)

This 1990s classic stars Macaulay Culkin as an eight-year-old boy named Kevin who is stranded by his parents when they accidentally fly to France on Christmas vacation without him. Kevin is then forced to defend the house from burglars with the use of creative booby traps. You’ll soon realize that this young boy isn’t as helpless he seems!

How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966)

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is Dr. Seuss’ famous tale of a bitter Grinch with a heart 'two sizes too small' who plots to steal Christmas from the town of Whoville. The Grinch soon learns that the true meaning of the holiday season doesn’t come from gifts and decorations, but from within. Looking for a more modern version? Check out director Ron Howard’s adaptation of the classic story starring Jim Carrey!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Not a big fan of traditional Christmas movies? Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is anything but ordinary. Written by Burton and directed by Henry Selick, this stop-motion animation film tells the story of Jack Skellington, a resident of Halloween Town who discovers a portal to Christmas Town. He becomes infatuated with the holiday and decides takes over as 'Sandy Claws' even though his interpretation isn’t quite right.

Love Actually (2003)

The month before Christmas can sometimes be the most daunting, especially when love is on the line. Love Actually connects the lives of eight different couples in London during the frenzied weeks before Christmas Day. The movie is complete with a star-studded cast including the likes of Hugh Grant, Emma Thomson and Keira Knightley. This romantic comedy is filled with drama that will make you laugh, cheer and cry. Don’t forget the box of tissues!

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Feeling like you’ve gotten a little too old for the magic of Christmas? No need to fret! Go back in time by watching all your favourite Muppets and their comedic take on Dickens’ classic book, A Christmas Carol. With super catchy tunes, don’t be surprised to find yourself singing along!

The Polar Express (2004)

Rediscover the spirit of Christmas by taking a magical train ride on the Polar Express. Follow a skeptical little boy’s journey to the North Pole to find the truth behind the holiday, which leads him straight to jolly old Saint Nick. The movie is computer-animated using motion-capture technology that will make even the most mystical moments seem real! Complete with dancing waiters and a whimsical man who lives on the roof, this ride is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)

Relive the classic tale of Rudolph, a reindeer who struggles to fit in because of his glowing red nose. Even half a century later, this sentimental Christmas cartoon reminds us to appreciate those who are unique as we watch Rudolph’s shining red light save the day.

The Santa Clause (1994)

After a freak accident, Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) puts on Santa Claus’ suit without reading the fine print.
