What’s the story?
Eager to prove his lasting cinematic brilliance after several consecutive “flops,” and under the pressure of the media, the public and his family, Nine chronicles the struggles of Italian director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he attempts to create the script for his latest film, Italia. Unbeknownst to the production crew, the film’s story exists only in Contini’s mind, and, as the pressures of press releases and decisions mount against him, the director turns to a series of childhood flashbacks and dream sequences for inspiration.
Why see it?
Aside from the film’s whopping five Golden Globe nominations and ever-growing Oscar buzz, Nine is yet another example of Rob Marshall’s outstanding directorial talent and unique vision. His big-screen adaptation of Chicago stunned viewers and critics alike, and the diverse and talent-filled cast of Nine worked flawlessly with Marshall to create yet another outstanding, must-see film.
Problems?
Those who only head to the theatre purely for relaxation should pass by Nine in favour of the ever-present blockbuster-of-the-moment. Chock-full of time and character changes accented with flashy big-band show tunes, this film demands audience involvement and a love for musical theatre.
All in all:
An engaging, funny and dramatic musical.
