Is it possible to have a strictly physical relationship without emotions getting
in the way?
Rating: 14A
Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline
What’s the story?
When struggling writer Adam Kurtzman (Kutcher) finds out that his famous father (Kline) is sleeping with his ex-girlfriend, Adam turns to alcohol and calls any girl’s number on his contact list. The wild night leads him to reconnecting with his old friend Emma Franklin (Portman). Emma, an overworked doctor, proposes entering into a relationship in which she and Adam are friends with benefits with strictly no romantic connection. Adam quickly agrees and some ground rules are put into place – like no breakfast together the morning after, no using each other as emergency contacts and absolutely no snuggling. The arrangement seems foolproof, but how long will it take before their emotions get in the way?
Why see it?
No Strings Attached showcases many guys’ idea of a fantasy relationship, but instead puts the female lead (Portman) in the romance-phobic position. This movie is empowering to women and still hilarious. Portman and Kutcher demonstrate a believable chemistry and have you rooting for them to take their relationship further than purely physical.
Problems?
This movie is far too predictable and the clichés are barely endurable. Funny yes, but nothing new is brought to the table in terms of a romantic comedy. The entire plot can be easily foreseen by watching the trailer. Also, Kutcher’s mediocre performance is clearly overshadowed by critical darling Portman’s ability to make audiences fall in love with her.
All in all:
A heartwarming comedy that you should not bring your grandmother to.
