The Runaways

4 stars

The first princesses of rock are brought to the big screen by the princesses of child and teen stardom.

Rating: 14A

Stars: Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart, Michael Shannon, Tatum O'Neal

Whats the story?

Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart play Cherie Currie and Joan Jett in this biography about the wild girls who claimed the title of being the first all-girl rock band back in the '70s. Things aren’t as peachy as they seem on stage though; the music industry is a brutal world where no one is given the time of day, especially not a couple of teenage girls. Drugs and alcohol mix in with too much rock and not enough sanity and for mere 15 and 16 year olds, the combination just might be too much...

Why see it?
Fanning and Stewart both give stellar performances and if you’re expecting flashes of their characters, Jane of the Volturi or Bella Swan, from the Twilight series, then you will be disappointed because these budding actresses really showcase their wide spectrum of acting abilities. You don’t have to love rock music to enjoy this movie and if films like Almost Famous are on your favourites list, The Runaways is definitely one to watch.

Problems?
Sex, drugs, teens and rock 'n' roll fuel this adventuresome film, so certain scenes may make viewers uncomfortable.

All in all:
A refreshingly true-to-life portrayal of the music industry’s scary side.
