What’s the story?
U.S. Marshals Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Ruffalo) are sent to a hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient named Rachel Solando. During his stay on the island, Teddy is haunted by delusions of his late wife, and starts suffering from paranoia. But as the puzzling case unfolds, the mystery becomes bigger than first expected, leaving Teddy to doubt everything and everyone he thinks he knows, including his partner.

Why see it?
People looking for an old-fashioned psychological thriller will love this movie. Shutter Island is an unforgettable and stylishly directed gem from Scorsese. It blends dark humour with puzzling brainteasers, and the surprising plot twists will keep you guessing until the exciting climax. DiCaprio delivers another compelling performance, proving once again that he is one of the most versatile actors of his generation. Meanwhile, the supporting cast, including Sir Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo, are also memorable and convincing. With this film, Scorsese manages to deliver all the essential elements that make his movies classics.

Problems?
People who are disturbed by graphic images should stay away. Violence is a major part of the movie and viewers may find some scenes upsetting. The pacing also gets a little slow during the middle of the movie, but it quickly picks up heading into the climax.

All in all:
A classy twist-filled thriller that ranks among Scorsese’s best.
