The Roommate

3 stars

The friends you make in college are the friends you’ll have for the rest of your life.

Rating: PG

Stars: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Cam Gigandet, Alyson Michalka

What’s the story?

Sara Matthews (Kelly) arrives at college eager for a fresh start in a new city away from her ex-boyfriend. Upon her arrival, she meets party girl Tracy Mrgan (Michalka), who takes her to a frat party where she stumbles upon the rugged but handsome Stephen (Gigandet). Everything is going great until Sara arrives back at her dorm and meets her new roommate, Rebecca (Meester). At first, Rebecca is portrayed as a nice, shy girl, but soon Sara sees this is not the case. She is overprotective of Sara and tries to keep her away from everyone else. Rebecca knows when all of Sara’s classes let out and she wants Sara to be her new best friend. She will literally do anything to have Sara all to herself. Everyone wants to make new friends in college, but do some people take it a tad too far?

Why see it?

Anyone who enjoys a good thriller should go see this movie; it keeps you on the edge of your seat and provokes you to cover your eyes. Anyone who is a fan of Gossip Girl should also see this movie. We are used to seeing Leighton Meester portrayed as a spoiled rich girl (Blair Waldorf) in the hit show, but she successfully takes on a very different role in this film as an obsessive roommate. If you’re not a Gossip Girl fan, don’t be discouraged; hottie Cam Gigandet, who plays vampire James in the Twilight series, also stars in this movie. Gigandet will have you swooning in your seat.

Problems?

Anyone who is not a fan of gore should give The Roommate a skip. Also, the movie is not as frightening as one may expect from watching the trailers.

All in All:

A twisted thriller.

What a great way to start

What a great way to start university! Watch this movie and be afraid of making friends. Of course not all people go to this...extreme to make friends; usually it just happens, sometimes you have to make an effort. Being a totally obsessive roommate is not the way to go.
