Top 10 Cheesiest Horror Movies

Get in the Halloween spirit with these awesomely cheesy horror flicks!

We've all been there, after stuffing yourself with junk food on a cool fall night, you settle down to watch a movie and stumble upon something from the horror genre. Some horror movies are great and will frighten you for days, but others aren't the best and will leave you scratching your head. There are plenty of cheesy horror films out there; here's a list of 10 worth mentioning.

Warning: The following movies are not for the faint of heart! (Some movies are rated R.)

10) Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

If you've ever seen this movie, than you most likely know how cheesy it is. It's about aliens that look like clowns who land on earth and go on a killing spree. The film is clearly low-budget, but perhaps that’s part of its cheesy charm. All in all, this movie is good for a laugh. Although, those who are already scared of clowns should stay away!

9) Jason X (2001)

This horror classic is the 10th Jason film in the series! I can understand making two or three sequels, but do you really need to make 10? In this installment, Jason Vorhees, the main antagonist in the series, is frozen aboard a spaceship in the year 2455. This movie is a standard slasher film with a space setting. Also, if you follow the Friday the 13th film series, you will realize that Jason was killed in a previous film, making his cheesy resurrection impossible.

8) Drag me to Hell (2009)

A witch, a curse and lots of screaming – that explains the majority of this film. This movie did have some scary parts, but otherwise it was just a normal supernatural movie with a B-list cast. The cheesy factor comes with the ancient witch that puts a curse on those who displease her! There is something bone-chilling about an angry old lady!

7) Redneck Zombies (1989)

We've all seen hillbilly stereotypes, but when these rednecks turn into zombies, this stereotype gets even cheesier. The fun begins when a chemical waste barrel is used to make whiskey for a group of hicks. The hillbillies turn into zombies, and the blood starts to flow! Because the movie is more focused on comedy, the fright factor is minimal. As the tagline for the movie says, “They're Tobacco Chewin', Gut Chompin', Cannibal Kinfolk from Hell!”

6) Pumpkinhead (1988)

This cult favourite is a cheese ball movie through and through. When a father seeks revenge for the death of his young son, he gets the help of a witch who guides him in creating a  pumpkin-headed killer. The hunt ensues with lots of blood and guts as Pumpkinhead stops at nothing to torture the teens that killed the young boy. The title alone has a cheese factor of 10, but the plot is extra lame!

5) When a Stranger Calls (1979)

Everyone has heard the story about the babysitter being called by the man upstairs. This story is scary and takes less than five minutes to tell, but the producers were able to make the short story into a boring, 97-minute movie. This movie is quite unrealistic because personally, if I was receiving creepy phone calls and I was alone, I would get out of the house as fast as possible. All in all, the story is better left a myth than a movie.

4) Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Nothing says cheesy like zombies! This movie is the first of four in the series. The story follows a group of men who have the unfortunate job of dealing with the accidental release of a group of zombies onto an unsuspecting town. As we all know, zombies eat brains, so the cheesiness factor in that alone is enough to place this classic on my list!

3) Scream (1996)

This slasher movie features a group of teens who find themselves in the middle of a typical horror movie plot. Ghostface, a mysterious killer, is terrorizing the group with creepy phone calls and a large machete. The killer is always dressed in a ghost costume, adding to the cheese factor of this movie. The film was also followed by numerous sequels that got progressively cheesier.

2) Child's Play (1988)

More commonly known as Chucky, this movie is about a doll that is possessed by a crazed murderer. The doll lands in the hands of unsuspecting Andy, and chaos ensues. Strange things begin to happen, but nobody would suspect a doll…right? In the end, Chucky becomes a terrifying character that is surprisingly difficult to kill!

1) Leprechaun (1993)

This classic mixes two fun holidays together to make one majorly cheesy movie! The movie is about a man whose life starts to go awry after he captures a leprechaun in Ireland and brings it to his hometown. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't leprechauns more concerned with protecting their gold than murdering people? Because I've never heard of a leprechaun with bad intent, this film gets my coveted cheese-tasic award!
