Spells by Aprilynne Pike

3 stars

Spells is a mix of Harry Potter and Twilight.

The sequel to the New York Times bestselling book, Wings by Aprilynne Pike, Spells is a romantic fantasy with a predictable plot. Laurel, the heroin with a rather dry personality, is left on the doorstep of two unsuspecting humans and later finds out she’s a faerie. Sound familiar? It gets worse. In Spells, Laurel is summoned to attend Avalon Academy, a prestigious school for faeries in an alternate world. While there, she falls into an unrealistic love triangle involving her human boyfriend and an exotic faerie.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Spells, I found it to be just a watered down, girl version of Harry Potter with a hint of Twilight added into the mix. However, Pike did do a nice job of describing the world of Avalon to the readers and pulling them into the mythical world. Spells offers a nice balance of fantasy and reality to make a fun easy read for younger audiences.
