The newest installment in the Vampire Diaries series follows Elena in her quest to free her vampire love, Stefan, from the Dark Dimension where he is being held and tortured. The only catch? To do so, she must trust Stefan’s brother, Damon – the very individual who sent him there.
Smith’s writing style has changed since the series began in the early ‘90s. Action scenes, formerly a forte for Smith, prove muddled and confusing. Additionally, she discusses surface issues in great detail – male fans may be turned off by a series of long-winded depictions of dresses. After the suspense-charged predecessor, this novel feels lacking, primarily focused on society life in the Dark Dimension.
The book is chiefly aimed at fans of the book series; others may find it difficult to pick up in the middle of the tangled storyline. Even with Elena and Stefan separated, the romance aspect is maintained, although it loses some of the action of previous tales. However, those still hooked on the characters will find this book an ultimately satisfying read.
