Student Work Experience

Please note: a fax will be sent out to all Career Preparation coordinators/teachers in May with work experience availability. Positions are available on a first come, first served basis, so please book as early as possible.

Position 1: Student Journalist 2 students per school per year (students cannot be placed during same month). These positions are available on a first come, first served basis. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Responsibilities: Travelling to various schools with a Youthink supervisor to interview students; writing assigned stories, choosing and editing stories to appear in Youthink; various interviews with professional athletes, rock/pop stars and community members (depending on the student's interests and the interview availability)

Time commitment: 40 hours. Student should be available for a 1 week placement. Usual hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday - Friday. Occasionally, evening hours may be necessary to do such things as attend plays, concerts or movies.

Requirements for the position: Student must be interested in pursuing a writing career and must have demonstrated writing ability (high marks in English or other writing-related courses). Student(s) must be pleasant, willing and assertive.

Position 2: Youthink Student Liaison (Ideal for a student interested in working with Youthink who can't miss class time) 1 or 2 students (see option A: 80 hours or option B: 40 hours) per school

Responsibilities: Keeping in contact with Youthink via phone or email to discuss events at your school and offering advice and opinions regarding the magazine. This is not an "in office" position.

Time commitment: 8 hours per month (approx.)

Option A: 1 position per school for a student to be the Youthink liaison for their school for the entire school year Student will receive 8 hours per month for work experience (total hours: 80)

Option B: 2 students per school: 1 student for September - January (total hours: 40)

Class Presentations

Bring a Youthink school liaison into your classroom for one of the following class presentations...

General Youthink Presentation - This presentation has been developed for any classroom, for the purpose of increasing interest in and awareness of Youthink.

Objectives:

  • To inform students of everything that Youthink has to offer (opportunities, benefits, rewards, etc.)
  • To increase interest in reading and writing for Youthink magazine.
  • To recruit potential regular writers.

Career Presentation - This presentation has been developed for Career Preparation, Writing or English classes. There are two types of career presentations: a personal career profile, or a general journalism career profile.

Objectives:

  • To give students an idea of the different career opportunities in the field of print journalism and more specifically at Youthink magazine
  • To provide students with a description of the position as a Youthink school liaison (as an example of a career in the field)
  • To describe the background (education and work experience) of the school liaison.
  • To provide students with the ways in which they can work for Youthink Magazine.
  • To give students some helpful advice in pursuing a career in journalism

Writing Presentation - This presentation has been developed mainly for Writing, English, or Journalism classes, and includes a writing assignment and specific tips on how to write an article for a publication such as Youthink.

Objectives:

  • To inform students of the writing opportunities at youthink magazine
  • To recruit potential regular writers
  • To give students helpful instruction on producing quality pieces of writing
