Despite finding success with his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Alec Ounsworth seems to have found a solo album a bit too much to handle. Lacking subtlety, the album tries too hard to expose its bones when it should’ve worked on greater distinction between its tracks. If his nasally tone doesn’t tire you out within the first few songs, the constant rehashing of a purportedly jazzy bass and drums will. If you’re looking for an indie release with an edge, look to Modest Mouse or The Fratellis instead. Ounsworth’s debut is one that will rely heavily upon preexisting fans for purchases and downloads alike.
