Since their inauguration, Animal Collective has not only been pushing envelopes, but within them, they’ve instilled genre confines, sealed them with a kiss, and taken them to the post office to be mailed somewhere far, far away. What we are left with is the world of “Merriweather Post Pavilion,” where melodious sing-alongs, fetching hooks and driving rhythms (all trademarks of popular music) meet splatters of synth, Afro-Brazilian tribal drums and verbalizations, rave alarms and psychedelic handclaps. With vocalists Avey Tare (Dave Portner) and Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) juxtaposing dreamy detached airiness with focused bridges, zealous choruses and lyrical clarity to end up on the same page, many of the collective’s previous skeptics may have just been swayed.
