Blue Rodeo: The Things We Left Behind

3 stars

Aging country-rockers make a respectable return but fail to surprise.

Canadian folk-rock quintet Blue Rodeo is back, once again, with the group's recent and ambitious double-album release - their 11th studio effort since 1987. Alive are the band's folksy, layered melodies, and especially its characteristic blissful Jim Cuddy-Greg Keelor vocal harmony in no finer form than on the second-disk track Don't Let the Darkness in Your Head. The record comes out of the gate strong with a string of refreshing tunes, among them Never Look Back, but the spirit is quickly dampened by a mostly forgettable, melancholic second disk. Redemption comes in the soulful Venus-Rising, but doesn't bring with it the wow-factor needed to hook new listeners.

Morgan's fave track: Never Look Back
