Calgary artist experiments but stays true to signature sound.
Chad VanGaalen has certainly made a name for himself as an original and exploratory self-made indie artist at home and beyond. The two-time Juno nominee and Polaris Prize shortlister now gives birth to Diaper Island, his fourth release since debuting with Infiniheart in 2004. Thankfully, the Calgary-based artist hasn’t strayed too far from his signature sound, but he has certainly grown beyond his approach to previous albums – not surprising for a guy with an experimental style. Tracks are a bit catchier, and songs like Replace Me and Freedom For A Policeman are more guitar-ridden than anything on past releases. Fans favouring his past works need not worry, as Diaper Island will meet, if not, exceed the hopes of indie listeners.
