With Common's keep-it-real attitude, and executive producer Pharrell William's ear for rhythm, one can't deny that "UMC" is an everlasting edition to hip-hop music. Common implements slight changes, but still keeps to his signature smooth style and thoughtful lyrics. He tactfully blends old and new-school flavours to satisfy listeners from both sides of the spectrum. Hey, doesn't the pacing of "What a World" have a hint of Grandmaster Flash? I think I even heard a dash of Afrika Bambaataa's Planet Rock in "UMC's" intro track. Obviously, Common has been studying hard - and it has paid off.
