Foster The People: Torches

3 stars

Californian indie-pop band releases mediocre debut.

Foster The People, a five-piece indie-pop band headed by Mike Foster, does not shatter any new musical ground with its debut record Torches. A few catchy jingles top the track list, which lure the listener into Foster The People’s lightweight appeal. This appeal is largely found in Pumped Up Kicks, the band’s most acclaimed single. Besides a few other toe-tappers, such as Helena Beats and Houdini, the record quickly fades into the type of mediocrity that can be found on any clothing store's playlist. Breathtaking indie-pop is rare to come by these days, and Torches seems to be just another pop record ripe for Apple commercials.
