Former grunge-punk princess fights – and fails – to reclaim right to sullied throne.
Fans expecting a throwback to Hole’s wild and raunchy glory days are instead treated to a whiskey-stained album that is surprisingly raw and sincere. Listeners will feel nostalgic hearing singer Courtney Love shriek and howl her way through energized tunes like Loser Dust and Skinny Little B****, but the tunes’ heavy hooks and dirty riffs are outnumbered by commercial-friendly and largely forgetful ballads that are anchored by lulling guitar and throaty vocals. With Love as the last original band member standing, Hole’s fourth album goes from a prospective comeback to a whittled down stab at solo success.
