New-folk front-runners deliver positive vibes with their latest album.
As the new folk movement spills out of North America into international waters, Jon and Roy have proven themselves more than capable of taking the plunge with the release of their third studio album, Homes. Since the success of their critically acclaimed 2008 album Another Noon, the nominal duo have expanded into a four-piece band, with the addition of violinist Dougal McLean and bassist Ryan Tonelli, adding new flavour to the fresh and cozy feel-good tunes.
With their songs just popping with honesty and optimism, vocalist and songwriter Jon Middleton reveals that they have much hope for the future of the band: “I think the future holds good things [for the band]. We’ve been making small but positive strides lately...I see us becoming much better as a band and just enjoying ourselves, really.”
While Homes stays true to the band’s folksy roots, the 14-track album abounds with generous bursts of reggae beats and jaunty drumming, with Middleton drawing inspiration everywhere from lively African rhythm to classic old style blues. “We’re trying to send a good vibe,” says Middleton. “I know I get a positive and warm feeling from the music I enjoy, and I hope that’s what we’re putting out there.” Both spirited and thoughtful, this summer, Homes is destined to sail airwaves worldwide.
