Kathryn Calder: Are You My Mother?

4 stars

Sensational vocalist breaks away from band to record her first solo album.

A member of two established Canadian indie-rock bands – The New Pornographers and Immaculate Machine – Kathryn Calder is proving that her voice is strong enough to stand on its own in her debut solo album, Are You My Mother? Featuring a voice that is easy to listen to and a cast of strong supporting instrumentals, this is one album that should definitely gain at least a minute of your time. While listening to Are You My Mother?, I found myself at first tuning out the words, which tended to blend into the background music. But when I made an active attempt to pay attention, I discovered emotional and gripping lyrics that convey a message that is at times heart-wrenching, and at times, inspiring. This 10-track album is perfect for those who like relaxed music, as Are You My Mother? is easy on the ears and doesn’t require constant attention to enjoy.
