Winnipeg-based rock band release 32-tracks of pure indie.
The Paperbacks scream a longing theme of nostalgic tunes. Compelling and expressive, frontman Doug McLean grasps you with a twist of wistful poetry and distant metaphors. “December in the desert, and your family and friends are scattered like scraps of dust on Santa Ana winds.” The opening line reveals the essence of the melancholy to follow. Though lyrics remain bleak, driving pop tunes like A Hawthorne Sublet act as periodic breaks from the haunting theme. But they are short lived, as the album disintegrates back into tender harmonies and reverberating guitars.
