Periphery: Self-Titled

4 stars

Intricate guitar work shines through in forward-thinking metal album.

This self-titled debut album from metal band Periphery delivers a refreshing mix of meaningful lyrics and amazing guitar work. Composed of three guitarists as well as a bassist, drummer and lead vocalist, the multiple guitarists add many layers of rippling sound with their complicated finger-work while the drummer keeps a tight rhythmic beat to keep you rocking along to the album. The most interesting thing about this album is that it was entirely mixed, engineered, produced and mastered in guitarist Misha “Bulb” Mansoor's bedroom, giving the album an interesting and unique flow. Periphery is an up-and-coming progressive metal band for this decade and is one that fans of this genre should watch out for.
