A well executed debut from veterans of rock.
In a world devoid of real rock n’ roll, super group Them Crooked Vultures delivers a solid self-titled album. A heavy dollop of Queens of the Stone Age (Josh Homme), coupled with the soft side of Nirvana (Dave Grohl) and Led Zeppelin (John Paul Jones) is the best way to describe this collaborative effort. A strong alternative-rock sound packaged with an easily accessible assortment of songs, the band’s debut shines through as one of the year’s finest rock albums. Songs such as New Fang, Elephants and Reptiles are the brightest moments to be found, though the other tracks are certainly worth a listen. More guitar solos would have been welcomed, and this debut lacks urgency, the sort of thing that dictates that you must buy this CD. However, people looking for some genuine music in the mainstream today will greatly appreciate Them Crooked Vultures’ debut.
