Up and about Toronto indie band matures on sophomore LP.
The oh-so-lovable indie rockers hailing from Canada's music capital return with Champ. With each new Tokyo Police Club record, hearing Dave Monks' raw voice is somewhat like visiting an old friend. However, on the band's most recent release, Monks croons with distinctly more mature vocals. His new, scratchy voice and noticeably more cryptic lyrics result in unavoidable comparisons to Conor Oberst, especially in the opening tracks of the record. After a suspenseful two-year wait, Champ is somewhat of a disappointment for fans expecting the same old sound. For listeners experiencing Tokyo Police Club for the first time, it could be glorious.
