The most important night in Canadian music is just around the corner – the Junos Awards!
On February 1, 2011 the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced the nominees for the 40th anniversary of the Junos – and the list of nominees showcases an impressive group of Canadian artists whose popularity reaches far beyond our borders.
This year, Drake leads the pack with six nominations, while Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Hedley, Johnny Reid, Sarah McLachlan and Justin Bieber all earned multiple nominations.
Special awards will be given to a couple of Canadian legends. Newlywed Shania Twain will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and Neil Young will be presented with the Allen Waters Humanitarian Award.
As for the show, featured performers this year will include nominees like Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Down With Webster, Johnny Reid and Hedley.
Make sure to tune into CTV on March 27, 2011 as superstar Drake hosts the 2011 Juno Awards from Toronto.
Here’s a list of our picks and predictions for the 2011 Juno Awards!
Group of the Year:
Who should win: Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire deserves the Juno because their newest album, The Suburbs, has possibly been the biggest success by a Canadian band this past year, and they’ve been able to grow their fan base to vast expanses. Arcade Fire truly has achieved so much in 2010, making the nation proud.
ACTUAL WINNER: Arcade Fire
Rap Recording of the Year:
Who should win: Drake
I think Drake is the obvious choice in this category, with his album debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and selling 447,000 copies in the first week. No other rapper listed here came anywhere near that success this past year
ACTUAL WINNER: Shad
Artist of the Year:
Who will win: Justin Bieber
Although I really do hate to say this, I believe Justin Bieber will be the recipient of the Artist of the Year award. This is mostly due to his superstar success. Mention his name anywhere in the world and people will know who he is; thus, he is the most likely pick in the category.
ACTUAL WINNER: Neil Young
New Group of the Year:
Who will win: My Darkest Days
My Darkest Days just seem to hold the most promise. Discovered by Nickleback, these guys really know how to rock. Their two singles and brand new studio album have done really well on the charts, both in Canada and the United States. Keep a look out for the band: I predict you’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more of My Darkest Days in the future.
ACTUAL WINNER: Said the Whale
