From the first few melancholy bars of the opening song, I Will Possess Your Heart, to the final note of Transatlanticism, Death Cab for Cutie delivered a solid show on May 25th at the Stampede Corral.
Calgary has had the pleasure of hosting DCFC in years past, but the band showed no sign of growing tired of the city and performed with youthful excitement and intensity in front a large crowd of seasoned DCFC fans.
Being a fairly well established band, DCFC had a sizable repertoire of songs to choose from, spanning from the 90’s all the way to Codes and Keys, which was just released on May 31st. The indie rockers did an excellent job of balancing the tried and true classics with the unfamiliar, fresh, new tracks. They belted out favourites, such as We Laugh Indoors and Soul Meets Body, with the same enthusiasm of a band just discovering the songs for the first time.
Stand out moments of the night included Ben Gibbard’s acoustic performance of I Will Follow You into the Dark. True to Calgary’s tune, fans sang along with Gibbard the entire way, belting out the lines “from Bangkok to Calgary” with extra commitment as a wild and out-of-tune collective.
This excitement was only matched when the band walked back on stage for their encore, which included performances of Home Is A Fire and Title And Registration – the sheer volume of cheering surpassed that of the entire evening.
