Too many friends, too little character.
Joshua Bell’s latest release is just like that background music one hears in a luxurious restaurant – hard to notice, easy to forget. Notwithstanding collaborations with renowned veterans in the music industry (Marvin Hamlisch, Edgar Meyer, Sting, to name a few), At Home With Friends fails to gratify one’s ears. Its slow lethargic tunes induce not awe or inspiration but soporific drowsiness, as evidently portrayed in songs such as I Loves You Porgy, Oblivion and Left Hand Song. Perhaps Bell should revert to solo plays if that’s where he can exhibit his adeptness in the instrument best.
