Hot Breakfast: A Life Like This

Hot Breakfast: A Life Like This

3 stars

Surf-rock reggae cowboys deliver an eclectic potpourri of laid-back west-coast tunes.

Hot Breakfast emerged from the summertime beaches of Canada’s West Coast – and their origins shine through in the sundry six tracks that make up A Life Like This. Their sophomore album is a blend of country, rock and alternative flavours, creating a sound that truly deserves the title of distinct. Hot Breakfast pulls off reflective lyrics while still maintaining a go-with-the-flow attitude. In tracks such as Schoolin’, the band repeats childhood lessons with newfound knowledge, keeping it easy on the ears, but also thought-inspiring. A Life Like This is the type of non-conformist CD that is best listened to barefoot, with a pair of sunglasses on and a mind open wide.
