The Matinée Makes Their Mark

Youthink catches up with The Matinée's lead singer, Matt Layzell.

Coquitlam roots-rockers The Matinée have been making huge strides in the music industry lately. This year alone, the band made the Top 10 for The Shore 104’s Song Search contest, finished third in 100.5 The Peak’s Peak Performance Project and was recently featured in the first webisode of the Vogville Presents video series, a monthly online video series that documents stories of select musicians. I recently caught up with The Matinée’s lead singer Matt Layzell (pictured centre) to talk about making music, the Vogville vid and what it’s like to be in a band with your friends.

YT: You guys were friends in high school. Which high school did you all attend and how did the band form?

ML: We all went to Centennial [in Coquitlam]. In high school, we were all involved in music… a couple years after high school we started writing songs and it just came [together] naturally.

YT: Has being in a band put a strain on any of your friendships?

ML: Yeah, it has been hard. Travelling and working with your best friends is the best, but when it comes to those serious talks about finance and being hard on each other, it’s harder ‘cause were friends.

YT: The Vogville video series gives fans a chance to get to know bands on a more intimate level. What do you hope your fans will learn about The Matinée?

ML: I just want them to notice all the work that goes into music behind the scenes. You don’t realize how much work and creativity goes into recording a song… also how much fun goes into making our music.

YT: Your next album is set to be released in 2012. Have you started writing?

ML: We’re always writing. Recently we rented a cabin, locked ourselves in there and just wrote day and night. We have about 25, 30 songs to pick from for our album.

YT: How will you measure your band’s success in the coming years?

ML: If we can continue to make records and continue to tour, then we’ll be really happy. Ultimately, if we can all sit around as a band in a few years and still be friends, then we’ll be happy.
