Teen Band Contest: Top Three Media Workshop

On Friday, April 9th 2010, the top three in BC's Best Teen Band contest 2009-2010, High Life Scenery, Split the Silence and The Knots took part in a Media Training Workshop held at the Youthink office in Burnaby.

All members arrived with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn and educate themselves about working with the media. The Youthink editorial team presented ideas about the proper way to set up an interview, gave valuable tips on the right and wrong ways to conduct themselves in an interview and through stories of past interviews that Youthink has done with musicians, the three bands also learned about what they can expect to be asked in an interview.

With all the valuable information that was being shared, it was no surprise that the aspiring musicians listened intently and asked questions in order to digest as much as they could. One the Youthink team completed their portion of the workshop, it was time for the bands to learn about to turn their love for music into a career... and make some money along the way!

Terry O’Brien from SOCAN (the Canadian copyright collective that administers the performing rights of more than 90,000 composer, author and music publisher members in Canada) came in to do a presentation for the bands. He talked about how to make money in the business, when it came to copyright fees and licensing, which was of definite interest to the bands that are trying to make it big in the music industry.

The workshop proved to be educational and fun. While everyone left having learned a huge amount of vital information that they might need in the near future, they also got to know more about each other as bands and as individuals!

These three finalists will compete live on Saturday, May 1st, 2010, 2pm at Tom Lee Music Hall in Vancouver. The winner will be announced live and receive great prizes! Check out the Teen Band Top 3 page at www.youthink.ca!
