"What do I want to be remembered for? I think on my tombstone they should write: 'He cared, most of the time,'" jokes Cadence Weapon.
According to the 22-year old rapper from Edmonton rapper, Afterparty Babies, his most recent release, differs from his freshman album (Breaking Kayfabe) in many ways. Unlike the more serious tracks on Kayfabe, Afterparty Babies features a more upbeat, hyper, dance-like rhythm. In addition, "the subject matter is more personal," reflects Candence, a change that is readily apparent especially on tracks such as Do I Miss My Friends?, where he expresses his thoughts on touring and how he feels about being away from his hometown friends.
Other standout tracks, such as In Search of the Youth Crew and House Music, will make you want to get up and start dancing. It is said by critics that Cadence Weapon’s ability to make fun of society through his songs by making fun of himself is what makes him so likable as not only a rapper, but a person too, a trait which shines through on Afterparty Babies.
Even though Cadence Weapon says the response to the album has been very positive, "especially in the UK," he does recognize a distinct difference in how crowds in the US and Canada receive his music. "Sometimes the crowds in the States can be a little confused with this style of rap," he explains. "While Canadian fans are more receptive and understanding, fans in the States have a certain mindset on the style of music. My music is more personal and electronic but some fans think that rap music means 'thug-rap.'"
Cadence's varied musical influences, including Tricky and David Bowie, have influenced his career greatly. He says that, "Tricky has definitely had an effect on the production, beat and vocal styling of the music," while David Bowie has influenced his stage show presence, explaining, "I try to get more flamboyant; you know get my leather jacket on."
When asked what advice he has for aspiring musicians facing the challenge of breaking into the industry, Cadence Weapon’s response is clear: "Be original instead of trying to be like someone else."
Cadence Weapon's originality in the music industry has led to the success of Afterparty Babies. His down-to-earth attitude and personal style of music makes him a great role model for teens and music-lovers today.
