Crystal Kid: Crystal Clear About Their Music

When you hear Crystal Kid, you automatically think energy, which is basically what the band of two brothers (Charles and Frank Torrealba) is all about. Born and raised in Brazil, along with many other parts of the world, and now based out of Calgary, the band has developed quite an eclectic view on music. “We’ve moved to many different countries since we were kids, so it’d be somewhat ignorant of us to just stand here waving one flag when we’ve learned from so many other cultures,” states guitarist and keyboardist Charles.

This spring, Crystal Kid released their self-titled EP and so far the response has been great. “We’ve had great reactions from the audiences we’ve played the songs to, and anyone who’s heard the record has loved it,” says Charles. The recording is full of positive and intriguing pop-rock songs, along with catchy beats and self-written compositions. “[Songwriting] is the core of everything we do,” explains Charles. “If we didn’t write our own material, we would feel empty. Plus, we make sure that the music we write is strong, catchy, with substance and it needs to mean something to us.”

Growing up in so many different countries, such as Brazil, has definitely aided the band in their success. “Brazilians are very positive and cool headed. So it has given us the patience and energy to stay focused on our craft,” says Charles. In addition, inspirations such as Michael Jackson and U2 have taught Crystal Kid the importance of learning from other artists. “You can’t just dive into any project without knowing what’s already been done. But, we don’t constantly think about being different; we just do our thing, and evolve as we go,” expresses Charles.

Keep your eye out for Crystal Kid’s self-described “energetic, intriguing and fun” show as the duo performs throughout Alberta in October and November.
