Originally born and raised in small town Maple Ridge, BC, the past year has been a dream come true for the McKillip sisters, collectively known as One More Girl. Having been born into a musical family, they admit that they’ve wanted to be in the music business ever since they could talk. After signing to EMI Music Canada last year and hitting radio charts with several singles, the girls have been called the “fresh faces of country music.” I recently sat down with One More Girl to talk about music, family and the bright future that is surely ahead of them.
At the mere mention of the October release of their debut record Big Sky, Britt and Carly McKillip can hardly contain their excitement. “We’ve worked hard on it and we’re pretty proud of the songs,” says Carly. “So we just hope that it’s relatable and that people believe in it as much as we do.”
One More Girl confesses that having their father produce the album will always hold a special place in their hearts. “I definitely don’t want anyone else to produce my album,” says Britt. “I mean he’s [Tom McKillip] the CCMA producer of the year, so we’ve got one of the best producers in the country, and he happens to be our father.”
Strong family values are the basis of One More Girl, and the McKillip sisters admit they have been performing together since they could remember. “We succeed together, and we fail together. So it’s like no matter what happens, I know she’s going to stick with me, and she knows I’m going to stick with her,” says Carly.
While the sudden fame and accolades could overwhelm most people twice their age, Britt and Carly have taken their success in stride. “I think that we do bring something different to Canadian country that maybe they haven’t seen in a while, a new sound, and youth, and fun, and energy. And I think it’s going to be fun,” smiles Carly.
