Honolulu-born pop-folk star returns with even darker, even better songwriting.
Hawaiian folk artist Mason Jennings’ latest release is his eighth studio album – and second on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire label – a darkly titled record, Blood of Man. In keeping with its bleak moniker, the album is abound with raw lyrics and dark imagery sprung from Jennings’ memories. The track Pittsburgh recalls difficult times from adolescence, while allusions to graveyards and storms and – of course – blood is never far behind on the rest of the album’s songs. Jennings once again capitalizes on unique vocals and tight songwriting to create a record that manages to dive head-first into the darkest spectrum of human emotion, without dragging along.
