U.K. trio reveals soft side in Battle for the Sun.
Battle for the Sun is the familiar Placebo with an unfamiliar softness. It starts rather unimpressively with the repetitive, angst-filled Kitty Litter, but soon improves. Brian Molko’s voice is as high pitched as ever, but with less of an edge – he even goes husky for the soft-rocking Happy You’re Gone, a surprisingly good ballad with twinkling keys and heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics. While not completely losing its hard kick or dark outlook in this album, Placebo incorporates strings and horns into its songs to create a more melodious sound with less guitar squeals and more soft ballads. Surprisingly, these quieter moments are the ones that elevate the album.
