Pop Princess is back with a hard edge.
The good girl went bad in 2007, and now she’s pushing the boundaries even further with a darker new album. Russian Roulette serves as a daring lead single with chilling imagery and a gunshot conclusion. Cold Case Love and Fire Bomb provide the same sinister feel, but the singer has yet to abandon her Caribbean pop-princess roots. Sultry-sweet Rude Boy belongs on the dance floor and manages to keep the album afloat from eerie waters. The amount of expletives in Rated R could offend some listeners, but Rihanna gives us tough in spades while allowing just the right amount of haunting vulnerability to peek through.
