They’re Their There

Consisting of four friends, Jess Desrochers (drummer/mastermind), Harley Small (pianist/lead vocalist), Adam DeSouza (bassist) and Ross Jenkins (guitarist/bassist/singer/he-can-do-anything), Their There is an up-and-coming band from Earl Marriot Secondary School in Surrey, BC.

With a soothing yet indeterminable vibe, comparable to the likes of Vampire Weekend or Radiohead, Their There’s sound can simply be described as, “A warm cup of coffee on a cool morning,” says Jess Desrochers. Adding to their ever-evolving sound is the variety of instruments used in their songs, which includes the ukulele (their current instrument of choice), giving Their There’s music a unique feel, with an Hawaiian twist. “We are exposed to many different types of music, and that definitely makes us more open-minded to variety,” says bassist Adam DeSouza.

Aside from Their There’s distinct sound, the depth and maturity of this high-school band’s lyrics is another element that makes this group’s music really stand out. So where does songwriters’ Ross Jenkins and Harley Small mature insight come from? “I read a lot, a lot of my lyrics are based on literature I have read,” explains Ross. Yet, Their There’s songs ultimately convey messages and problems significant to teens, and anyone can relate to the relevance and eloquence of their music.

Winners of the 2008 Listener’s Choice Award at the Republic Music Festival put on by the Surrey Youth Ambassadors, it’s clear that this band already has a solid fan base, but, if you haven’t already, make sure to experience Their There for yourself at a local café or music competition.
