Words of Wisdom:
Make the Most of a Moment

Wise words on taking chances, living life to the fullest and snatching up opportunities.

Carpe Diem” – the Latin phrase meaning “to seize the day” is a saying many people have either heard or said to someone else to try and inspire someone to take a chance or snatch an opportunity. However, you don’t need to wait until someday in the future, after school is over, to seize the day!

Your years and days of high school are filled with moments to be seized, to treasure and to explore. No doubt you have heard many people say that getting involved is a key to having a great experience in high school. It’s true – finding a place in an area such as the fine and performing arts, on a sports team, as a member of an intramural team or as a part of a club will lead to a more memorable time in school.

Life is a balancing act. You need to walk a course between all studying, no studying, all work at your out-of-school job, and so on. Seizing the day means making choices that help you to enjoy all of the elements that come together in a day – sitting in physics class and only daydreaming about your after-school plans means that you will miss the opportunities that are there in front of you in physics!

Be part of the team. Being in school means being a team player – not a sports team – but the community team that makes up the school experience. Everyone: administrators, teachers, coaches, friends, parents and you yourself are there to help you have a memorable and successful time in school. Working with each other will give you more of those opportunities that you will remember in the years to come. You probably won’t remember the formulas from chemistry or math, or how to analyze a poem, but you will doubtless remember all the moments you managed to seize and now treasure. As the Buddha once said, “Be where you are; otherwise you will miss your life.”
